The political science major combines breadth and depth, helping students develop a general foundation for the study of politics and offering opportunities to explore particular areas of interest. Courses give students both a strong knowledge base and facility with the tools of political analysis. Most universities offers a substantial number of courses in all four fields of the discipline—Nigeria politics, international relations, comparative politics, and political theory—covering a range of topics and analytical perspectives. This political science degree programme can prepare students for a wide variety of vocations. After graduation, many students go to law school or graduate school, or work for service organizations, government, or business.

Areas of emphasis within the political science are Nigeria politics and public law, international relations and comparative politics, public administration and public policy, and political theory and methodology..

What is O level/WAEC subject combination (requirement) for Political Science?
The subjects needed to study Political Science in WAEC must contain five (5) credit. This subject combination is also applicable to NECO AND GCE… The O level requirement that is the compulsory WAEC subject combination for Political Science must include

  1. Government or History,
  2. English Language
  3. Three other subjects
  4. At least a pass in Mathematics is required
  5. A trade subject

 

What is JAMB UTME subject combination (subjects needed) for Political Science?
You should aim for a score of 180 – 200 and above in JAMB UTME to be on a safe side (Just an advice) because anything short of that may deny you of Admission/Post UTME. Of course, if you have a score below 180, you can consider College of Education or Polytechnic… Please note – JAMB is not the only option for admission. If you’re having troubles JAMB UTME maybe it’s time you pass through IJBM, JUBEB, ND or Predegree. JAMB UTME subject combination (subject to write in jamb) for Political Science are

What is Direct Entry Special consideration (waiver) for Political Science?
(i) University of Calabar (UNICAL) requires three ‘A’ level passes in Government and any one of Economics, Mathematics and Geography. History not acceptable in lieu of Government but accepts I.J.M.B.

(ii) University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) and Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU) accept ‘A’ level passes in Government, and any Social Science subject.

(iii) Obafemi Awolowo University,Ile-Ife (OAU) requires Government.

(iv) Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK) and University of Ibadan (UI) accept any two A-level passes

(v) ECWA Bingham University, New Karu accepts National Diploma in Public Administration at merit level

(vii) Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma requires A-level passes in Government and one social science subject are mandatory.

(viii) Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK) requires similar requirement as for Economics for both Direct Entry and UTME applicants. But a pass in O/L Mathematics is acceptable

(ix) University of Lagos (UNILAG) requires ; (a) Very good passes in three JUPEB/A-LEVEL subjects: Government, and any two of Lit-in- English, Economics, History, and CRS/IRS. (b) Candidates must also satisfy the ‘O’ Level requirement.

(xii) Covenant University Ota accepts ND (Upper credit) Public Administration plus UTME requirements.

(xiii) Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba accepts two A’ Level passes in Govt. and any one of History. Economics, Business methods and Geography or own Diploma or ND (upper credit) in Public Admin. Or LOCAL Government or HND (Lower Credit) in Public Administration or Local Government.

(xiv) Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria as in International Studies

(xv) Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Uli accepts ND/HND (Lower Credit) or NCE in any related Social/Management Science.

(xvi) Gombe State University, Gombe accepts NCE in relevant subject.

(xvii) University of Jos (UNIJOS) IN addition to the ‘A’ level passes required, credit passes at the ordinary level must include English Language, Government or History.

(xviii) Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki accepts HND, NCE and ND with a minimum of Merit and Upper credit respectively in relevant fields.

(xix) University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) accepts National Diploma in Public Administration at merit level plus UTME requirements.

(xx) Benson Idahosa University, Benin City requires in addition to the O’ level requirements specified, a minimum of two relevant subjects passed at GCE Advanced level or NCE (3 merits) or National Diploma in relevant field not below credit level.

(xxi) Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria accepts Three ‘A’ level/IJMB passes from any of the following subjects: Government, History, Sociology, Economics, Geography.

(xxiii) Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma accepts two ‘A’ level passes from Mathematics, Economics, Geography and Government or History are acceptable.”

(xxiv) Lagos State University, Ojo (LASU) accepts first degree in cognate or related discipline with minimum of second class lower division.

(xxv) Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU) accepts ND (Upper credit) from a recognised Polytechnic or degree in Arts, Social science or Law at least Third Class honours.

(xxvi) Kwara State University, Ilorin (KWASU) accepts two A’ Level passes in Govt. and any one of History. Economics, Business methods and Geography or ND (upper credit) in Public Admin. Or LOCAL Government or HND (Lower Credit) in Public Administration or Local Government.

(xxvii) Godfrey Okoye University, Ugwuomu-Nike – Enugu State requires three ‘A’ level passes in Government and any one of Economics, Mathematics and Geography. I.J.M.B.

(xxiii) Renaissance University, Enugu accepts at least a pass in A’ level GCE or its equivalent in Government and History or a National Diploma.

(xxiv) Niger Delta University Yenagoa (NDU) accepts: (a) Two ‘A’ level passes in Government and any one of the following: Economics, History or Geography. (b) N.C.E. at credit level in Political Science and in combination or Local Government Administration with credit passes.

(xxv) Southwestern University, Oku Owa accepts IJMB/NCE/ND/HND or its equivalents.

(xxvi) Bowen University, Iwo requires two A’ level passes in Government and any one of Economics, Geography, Mathematics or History.

(xxvii) Oduduwa University, Ipetumodu – Osun State accepts NCE with merit passes in relevant subjects.

 

What is WAEC, NECO, GCE, Special consideration (waiver) for Political Science?
(i) Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti – Ekiti State, Godfrey Okoye University, Ugwuomu-Nike – Enugu State, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU), University of Calabar (UNICAL), Obafemi Awolowo University,Ile-Ife (OAU), Lagos State University, Ojo (LASU), and Ekiti State University require credit pass in Mathematics. Ekiti State University also requires another Social Science subject apart from Government.

(ii) Obafemi Awolowo University,Ile-Ife (OAU) and University of Calabar (UNICAL) require credit pass in Government.

(iii) University of Ibadan (UI) requires 5 ‘O’ level credits in Government/History, English. Language and three other subjects plus at least a pass in Mathematics.

(iv) University of Calabar (UNICAL) requires two Social Science subjects including Government. It does not accept History in lieu of Government.

(v) Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU) and University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) require credit pass in Government and any 2 other subjects plus at least a pass in Mathematics. Does not accept History in lieu of Government.

(vi) Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki requires credit pass Mathematics and two other subject.

(vii) Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba accepts National Diploma in related Discipline at Upper Credit level.

(viii) Benson Idahosa University, Benin City requires credit pass in Mathematics

(ix) Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji-Arakeji accepts a pass in Mathematics.

(xi) Covenant University Ota same as Marketing.

(xii) Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria requires five O/level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Government or History, and any other two Social Sciences or Arts Subject.

(xii) Kaduna State University, Kaduna (KASU) requires a credit in Mathematics.

(xiii) Abia State University, Uturu requires Five SSCE credit passes in English Language, Government or History and any three subjects from Arts, Social Science subject and at least a pass in Mathematics

(xiv) Redeemer’s University, Mowe requires Five ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Government or History and two other subjects.

(xv) Kwara State University, Ilorin (KWASU) accepts credit passes in English, Mathematics, Government/History and two other social science subjects or one Arts and 1 social science subject.

(xvi) University of Lagos (UNILAG) requires five credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Government, Economics/ Geography and any one of History, Literature-in-English and CRS/IRS.

(xvii) Umar Musa Yar’ Adua University Katsina (UMYU) requires five O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Government or History or Civic Education and any other two credits in Arts/Social Science subjects in not more than two sittings.

(xvii) Kogi State University Anyigba – Credit pass in Mathematics is required.

(xviii) Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State (FULAFIA) – Same as in Sociology.

(xix) Bowen University, Iwo requires five credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Government and one social science subjects.

(xx) Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Enugu (ESUT) requires five credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Government and two social science subjects.

(xxi) Edwin Clark University, Kaigbodo requires five credit passes to include English Language, Economics, Government and any other two subjects plus at least a pass in Mathematics.

(xxii) Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba requires 5 credit passes including English Language, Mathematics, Government/History one subject from the Social Science and any other subject.

What is JAMB UTME Special consideration (waiver) for Political Science?
(i) Lagos State University, Ojo (LASU) requires Mathematics.

(ii) University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) – Government or History plus any two of Economics, Geography Lit in English, English and Mathematics

(iii) University of Ibadan (UI) – 3 subjects in Arts, Science Social Sciences

(iv) Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma – Government and Mathematics are mandatory

(v) University of Lagos (UNILAG) requires Government and any two subjects from Economics, Geography, History, Literature-in-English, CRS/IRS and Mathematics.

(vi) Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU) requires Government, one Social Science subject and any other subject.

(vii) Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki requires Government and any two Social Science subjects.
